Both Vedic astrology (Jyotish, the "science of light") and Western astrology read the same planets. The difference lies in where they begin measuring the zodiac, and that difference can move your sign.
Tropical and sidereal zodiacs
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons: Aries always begins at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the actual constellations in the sky. Because of the slow wobble of Earth’s axis (precession), the two have drifted apart by roughly 24 degrees.
The result is that many people’s Sun sign in Vedic astrology is the sign before their Western one. A Western Leo is often a Vedic Cancer, for example.
What each system emphasises
Western astrology is especially rich in psychology and personality. Vedic astrology places great emphasis on the Moon sign and the Moon’s Nakshatra (lunar mansion), and uses planetary periods called dashas to understand timing: when themes in your chart will be most active.
- Western: Sun sign, psychological insight, personal growth
- Vedic: Moon sign, Nakshatras, dashas, practical timing and remedies
- Both: the birth chart as a map of potential, not a fixed fate
Which should you use?
There is no wrong answer. Many people find Western astrology describes who they are, while Vedic astrology illuminates when and why things unfold, and offers traditional remedies such as mantras, gemstones and charity to ease difficult periods.
